Protect Your Lawn from Grubs This Fall

Late August to mid-September is prime time for grub infestations across the GTA. These small, white, c-shaped larvae live just below the surface of your lawn and feed on grassroots. If left untreated, they can cause major damage to your turf, or attract unwanted wildlife like skunks and raccoons.

Here’s what you need to know about identifying, treating, and preventing grub damage as the fall season approaches.

What Are Grubs and Why Are They a Problem?

Grubs are the larvae of beetles, typically June beetles or European chafers. They hatch in late summer and begin feeding right away. By fall, they’ve grown large and hungry, chewing through the roots of your lawn and leaving brown, patchy areas in their wake.

More than just cosmetic damage, grub infestations can kill entire sections of turf and weaken the lawn’s ability to recover in spring. Worse, the scent of grubs attracts predators like skunks, raccoons, and birds, who will dig up your lawn overnight in search of a meal.

Signs of Grub Damage

  • Spongy or loose turf that lifts like a carpet

  • Brown or dead patches that appear despite watering

  • Increased animal activity like skunk holes or overturned soil

  • Visible grubs when you pull up a section of lawn

If you see more than 5–10 grubs per square foot, it’s time to act.

What Are My Treatment Options?

1. Biological: Beneficial Nematodes

These are microscopic roundworms that actively hunt and kill grubs in the soil. Apply nematodes in late August to early September when soil temps are still warm. Water them in well, and keep the area moist for at least a week. This is a safe, pet- and pollinator-friendly solution that works best when applied in the evening or on a cloudy day.

2. Chemical Insecticides

For heavier infestations, insecticides like imidacloprid or chlorantraniliprole can be applied in late summer. These require careful timing and watering to be effective. Some require licensed application in Ontario.

How to Prevent Grub Damage Next Season

  • Healthy lawns are more resistant: Aerate and overseed in the fall to thicken turf.

  • Avoid overwatering: Grubs prefer moist soil.

  • Cut grass at 2.5–3 inches to promote deep root growth.

  • Use animal deterrents: Skunks and raccoons do serious damage overnight. Consider motion-activated sprinklers or Yard Guard ultrasonic sensors to protect your lawn.
